2009-2020
My granddog, Milton Barry and I walked through the tall grass to a hilly knoll overlooking the ocean. He wasn’t walking as fast in his old age, but he didn’t mind the walk together. As the afternoon sun was setting, we sat together and I laid my hand on his back.
“We’ve had some great adventures together, haven’t we Milt?”
“Some amazing adventures Papa,” he said.
“I gave you loves and treats.”
“And I gave you loves and kept the cats out of your yard.”
“I have always thought you to be a valuable part of my life and my little buddy.”
“You have always given me scratches and loved me.”
And then staring into his eyes I said, “Thank you Milton, I love you.”
Standing up, he looked at me with his big brown eyes and with his jutting lower jaw, which had the worst teeth in the world, he said, “I love you too, Papa. It’s time to go.”
As I sat on the knoll and watched, Mr. Milton Barry ran down the grassy hillside to the sea and as the sun set, he was gone.
