As I Lay Under the Stars

Audio Version, author’s voice.

As I lay on my back under the stars I wonder, “Is that the Aurora Borealis or is my headache causing my vision to shift?”

As I lay on my back under the stars I wonder, “Is that the space station or a really, really, really high jet and if I had a flashlight could it see my twinkling light shining up at it?”

As I lay on my back under the stars I wonder, “If that bat bites me on the nose will I have to start a series of rabies shots?”

As I lay on my back under the stars I wonder what the dog that is licking my forehead ate last because his breath smells terrible.

As I lay on my back under the stars I wonder why I pay top dollar for motion sensor lights only to have someone leave the switch off.

But mainly, as I lay on my back under the stars I wonder, “Why would that knucklehead grandson of mine leave his skateboard on the sidewalk?”

I’m Marty Mitchell, aka Captain Crash, the guy behind Mitchell Way. MitchellWay.com is the story of my misadventures in life and reflections on faith. ... Is Mitchell Way a state of mind? A real place? A way of life? Tough to say. You be the judge.

Oh Marty, lol! I’m laughing, but with much sympathy. You sure know how to turn your mishaps into great stories!

On #3, the answer is “Yes”. One year at Black Mountain a worker picked up a sick bat, and had to go through the whole series of shots. At the end of the summer, Tom presented him with one of our dog’s old rabies tag off their collar (on a nice chain). He still wears it to this day as a conversation starter.
